WORLD CLIMATE ACTION SUMMIT WORLD LEADERS AT COP28
The first days of the COP28 in Dubai have been hectic and full of twists and turns. A Conference of the Parties at the centre of criticism since its first announcement, weighed down by an extremely critical geopolitical scenario and in a global context in which the impacts of global warming, or 'global boiling' as it has been called by UN Secretary General António Guterres, are alarming.
THE PLEA FOR URGENCY FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AT COP28: CLIMATE ACTION AND IMMEDIATE FUNDS
The high-level Side Event on climate finance needs of developing countries, which took place during COP28 in Dubai, highlighted the progress made in implementing the Needs-Based Finance (NBF) project to facilitate access and mobilizing of climate finance for the needs and priorities of developing countries on a regional basis.
Present at the panel were the Cook Islands, Grenada and the Republic of Tajikistan, all agreeing with the need to enhance climate finance and its access, especially for climate adaptation.
MELONI GOES ALL-IN ON LOSS AND DAMAGE
Anything could have been expected from the leaders' summit at COP28, except coming out with Italy as the top global donor to the Loss and Damage Fund.
COP28, CLIMATE JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS: WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS?
COP28 on climate began on Thursday November 30th in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. There is great expectation for the outcomes of this conference, which takes place in an extremely worrying climate situation. The latest IPCC report, published in March 2023 at the end of the sixth assessment cycle, reminds us how far we are from the goal of keeping the global average temperature increase within 1.5 °C, and how the planet is increasingly incapable of supporting us. The price we all pay is high, but those who are paying the highest price are the most vulnerable populations in developing countries (source IPCC).
The same report also states that human rights-based climate action is more effective, and our group at the ICN adds that it is necessary to achieve climate justice.
