TOWARDS COP27: THE ACTUAL SITUATION
Climate diplomacy is back on track, and in a week's time we will see delegates, technicians, ministers and civil society representatives flying to Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, to open COP27 a little less than a year after the disappointing ending for most of Britain's COP26 in Glasgow. What will set off will be a peculiar COP. Initially conceived as a time for updating and comparing governments' climate goals with respect to COP26 with a specific focus on adaptation, in fact COP27 will be above all the first climate conference since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, a testing time for many Western countries caught between climate ambition and high utility bills.
CIVIL SOCIETY DEMANDS TO G20 LEADERS
From October 5-7, our volunteer Teresa Giuffrè attended the C20 summit in Bali, Indonesia. The C20 (Civil 20) is the official G20 engagement group representing civil society. Teresa was selected as a delegate from the Environment, Climate Justice and Energy Transition Working Group, having contributed this year along with ICN to draft policy proposals for G20 leaders. The proposals were included in the final Policy Pack that C20 representatives delivered to the Indonesian G20 presidency at the summit, representing the culmination of the C20 advocacy process.
YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN THE RENEWABLES SECTOR: ITALY-INDONESIA SIDE EVENT (G20 TROIKA)
Italian Climate Network is participating in the work of the "Environment, Climate Justice and Energy Transition" working group of the C20 (Civil 20), the official G20 engagement group representing civil society. As part of this, the working group held a side event on July 29 with the theme "Promoting Partnerships in Energy Transition," a collaboration among the three members of this year's G20 Troika: Italy (G20 2021 Chairmanship), Indonesia (2022) and India (2023). ICN volunteer Teresa Giuffrè was on the panel of speakers as Italy's representative.
HOW THE DIALOGUE WITH YOUNG PEOPLE FROM CIVIL SOCIETY WENT IN BERLIN DURING THE 13TH PETERSBERG CLIMATE DIALOGUE
The 13th Petersberg Climate Dialogue, was held between July 17-19 immediately following the G7 Summit and the Bonn interim negotiations, bringing together senior representatives from some 40 countries to prepare the way for COP27. As part of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue, an ICN volunteer also participated in the informal exchange with German government officials and other young civil society delegates.
NDC UPDATE: STILL MANY ABSENTEES AT ROLL CALL
At the conclusion of COP26 in November 2021, world leaders included in the final policy document, the Glasgow Climate Pact, a promise that each UNFCCC member state would submit updated targets on climate change mitigation and adaptation by COP27, or at least by the end of 2022. What happened to that promise? How many countries have actually filed updates to their national climate pledges (NDCs)?
