WOMEN, RIGHTS AND CLIMATE
HOW CLIMATE CHANGE IS AFFECTING HUMAN RIGHTS AND GENDER EQUALITY
Born as a series of featured articles in 2015, the success of the “Women, Rights and Climate” initiative has turned its activity into a core Section of Italian Climate Network. Coordinated by Chiara Soletti, young human rights specialist, the group delivers activities aimed at analysing the link between climate change and human rights, with a defined focus on gender issues. The goal is to raise awareness on these topics, developing a new consciousness about the complexity of climate change consequences. Thanks to the Women, Rights and Climate Section’s work, Italian Climate Network joined in 2017 the Women and Gender Constituency and is now contributing to human rights’ advocacy initiatives within the UNFCCC.
In line with its statute, Italian Climate Network embraces the core principles of the Women and Gender Constituency at the UNFCCC, with particular reference to:
- the need for international climate commitments to take into account the particular effects that climate change has on vulnerable groups discriminated against on the basis of gender;
- the promotion of full and effective participation of anyone suffering gender-based discrimination at every decision-making level of the climate debate, protecting and promoting human rights and gender equality.
