CLIMATE AND HUMAN RIGHTS

HOW CLIMATE CHANGE IS AFFECTING HUMAN RIGHTS AND GENDER EQUALITY

Born as an in-depth column for the Italian Climate Network in 2015, the “Women, Rights and Climate” initiative has evolved into the Climate and Human Rights Department. The group, coordinated by Chiara Soletti, consultant in the field of human rights and climate, carries out activities aimed at analyzing the link between climate change and human rights, with particular attention to gender issues.

“It is well known that climate change does not affect people in the same way. Women and men perceive and experience this phenomenon in different ways due to cultural expectations towards their gender. The roles, responsibilities and rights assigned to women too often translate into a reality that, in addressing the consequences of climate change, can limit the chances of survival. (…) For these reasons, a gender perspective focused on respect for human rights is a fundamental part of the solution to make climate action inclusive and find effective solutions that allow us to collectively address this phenomenon without leaving anyone behind. ” – Chiara Soletti

Thanks to the work carried out by the Department, in 2017 Italian Climate Network became an official member of the Women and Gender Constituency and contributing to advocacy initiatives for the defense of human rights within the UNFCCC. Among the results obtained so far by the Climate and Human Rights Section are:
