STATES GENERAL: IN ITALY, CLIMATE IN MOVEMENT

Held in the Ossola Valley last Sept. 1-3, the States General of Climate Action. The convening of "There will be a good climate" was for all Italian actors involved in various capacities and forms in climate and environmental issues and actions to (re)find each other and "Gather, strengthen and support the voices of Italian climate activism." Among those who responded to the call was Italian Climate Network.

COUNTRIES’ HISTORICAL RESPONSIBILITY

The climate discourse is also a discourse about responsibility. There is a direct link, proven by science, between development, emissions and global warming. The creation of a loss & damage fund at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, was the culmination of the recognition of one of the basic concepts of climate action: common but differentiated responsibilities. Ferdinando Cotugno, journalist for Il Domani, tells us about it.

NATURE RESTORATION LAW, WHERE ARE WE AT?

The European Parliament approved the Nature Restoration Law on July 12th. The law proposal requires European countries to implement measures to restore at least 20% of damaged land and marine ecosystems by 2030, contributing to reducing the loss of biodiversity and addressing climate change. The final text is expected before the end of the year, barring unforeseen circumstances.

PRESENTATION OF THE 2022 REPORT ON THE STATE OF CLIMATE IN EUROPE

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) publishes an annual report on the global climate, which complements the assessment reports and special reports of the IPCC. In the last two years, they have also started publishing specific reports for six regions of the world: North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Southwestern Pacific. This allows for understanding the specific impacts of climate change in each region, which is essential for planning and implementing appropriate adaptation measures.

Loss and Damage, Mitigation, Adaptation. It’s time to use the right words

In recent months-as the Italian Climate Network and as European civil society-we have been trying to draw the attention of policymakers and the public to the so-called Loss&Damage, the issue of loss and damage related to climate disasters. But it is not easy, on the one hand because that of the climate emergency continues to remain in the eyes of public opinion a problem that is "too high," too distant, too big to touch the strings of individuality, of everyday life, in spite of everything. On the other, because in this context of poor (in)education we continue to be confused by the many definitions and numerous terms that are often perceived as too technical, so much so that they confuse and distance us from the problem.
