TECHNICAL WORK CONCLUDED: FIRST STOCKTAKE ALMOST READY FOR COP28
The conclusion of two years of technical work related to the Global Stocktake has not been spared the tensions between North and South that seem to be building up during these interim negotiations, so much so that there has been no shortage of attempts to detract from the mitigation ambition by some countries.
PRESIDENCY GOALS PRESENTED
According to the chair, the strategy for COP28 would be ambitious and would reflect the interests of many of the parties involved
INTERMEDIATE NEGOTIATIONS INTO CAOS
The stalemate at the Bonn climate talks continues. A work agenda is still missing, and some southern countries are raising the bar.
THE ENERGY SECTOR IS NOT ON TRACK TO STAY WITHIN 1.5°C
Last week, a side event co-organised by the UNFCCC and the International Energy Agency (IEA) entitled 'Energy Sector Pathways to 1.5 Degrees' was held in Bonn, which revealed that the energy sector is not ready to meet the Paris Agreement target. In fact, current national energy policies would lead to a rise in global temperatures to 2.5°C in 2100, even 1°C degree above the Paris Agreement target. Both ambition and implementation, therefore, need to be urgently reinforced.
FIRST WEEK IN BONN: IT’S NORTH VS SOUTH, AGAIN
The first week of intermediate climate negotiations in Bonn, Germany, confirmed that the negotiating strategy of the Countries of the Global South, supported by China, responds to a long-term and multilevel vision. More concretely, the countries of the G77 group and the Chinese were not satisfied with the historic victory of the negotiations in 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, when they managed to unpack the front of the rich Countries and get approval for the creation of a fund for loss and damage after 30 years of debate, in Bonn the bar is in fact getting higher, thanks to the occasion of the launch of the first global inventory of the countries' efforts planned for this year at the COP: the so-called global stocktake.
