This side event aims to present the views of various experts on the role of voluntary carbon markets in achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement. In particular, the importance of voluntary action under the Paris Agreement and the decarbonisation process will be highlighted, with an in-depth look at the negotiations for Art. 6 and the post-Kyoto markets. In this regard, it will be discussed how the private sector can contribute to financing mitigation projects through the voluntary market, with an in-depth look at the Enhanced Transparency Framework and LULUCF reporting and accounting. Finally, the importance of an approach to compensation projects based on respect for Sustainable Development Goals, human rights and stakeholders’ participation will be reiterated.
